Billy Joel is staying optimistic in the face of adversity. The iconic singer-songwriter, 76, recently opened up about his diagnosis with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH), a rare brain condition affecting balance and mobility. In a candid interview on Bill Maher’s Club Random podcast, Joel shared, “I feel good… They keep referring to what I have as a brain disorder, so it sounds a lot worse than what I’m feeling.”
Though his condition has forced him to cancel 17 scheduled shows across North America and Europe, including high-profile stadium gigs in Edinburgh and Liverpool, Joel remains committed to recovery. He revealed he’s currently undergoing specialized physical therapy to manage symptoms, which were reportedly worsened by recent performances.
NPH, which causes fluid buildup in the brain, is most common in individuals over 60 and can impair vision, hearing, and movement. Joel’s wife, Alexis, expressed gratitude for his quick diagnosis and care, stating the family remains hopeful for his full recovery.
Despite ending his historic 10-year Madison Square Garden residency earlier this year, Joel’s passion for music hasn’t faded. “It’s still being worked on,” he noted, but fans can rest assured — the Piano Man’s spirit remains strong.
