VERDICT: Not Guilty and Guilty

A jury has reached a verdict in the trial of former Las Cruces Police Officer Felipe Hernandez.

Hernandez was found not guilty of second-degree murder, but GUILTY of voluntary manslaughter in the 2023 shooting death of Teresa “Terry” Gomez.

After the verdict, the state requested that Hernandez be taken into custody, noting the conviction involves an act of violence that resulted in death and carries a potential sentence of up to 11 years in prison.

The defense argued Hernandez should remain free until sentencing, citing his military service in Iraq, his law enforcement background, and his compliance with court orders throughout the trial.

Judge Jacquez granted the state’s request. Hernandez was taken into custody and will remain jailed until his sentencing. KFOX-TV
