School zone safety reminders for drivers and pedestrians
Slowdown in school zones!
As students return to school, the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) reminds motorists and pedestrians to make safety a top priority in and around school zones.
Whether traveling by vehicle or on foot, everyone plays a role in protecting children. Stay alert, obey traffic laws and remain aware of your surroundings.
Driver Safety Reminders
- Slow down. School zone speed limits are typically 5 to 10 mph lower than the regular posted speed limit. Always obey posted speed limits.
- Stop for school buses. Never pass a stopped school bus with flashing red lights. The 10-foot area surrounding a school bus is the most dangerous for children boarding or exiting.
- Obey crossing guards. Come to a complete stop when directed by a crossing guard holding a stop sign.
- Watch for children. Children can be unpredictable and may enter the roadway unexpectedly, including from between parked vehicles or in front of school buses. Use extra caution at all times.
- Yield at crosswalks. Always yield the right of way to pedestrians in marked crosswalks.
- Keep crosswalks clear. Do not stop in a marked crosswalk or block a pedestrian’s path at an intersection.
Pedestrian Safety Reminders
- Look both ways before crossing the street, even when using a crosswalk.
- Use marked crosswalks whenever available. Never assume drivers will stop.
- Stay on sidewalks or designated walkways whenever possible.
- Avoid walking in the roadway. Never enter traffic unexpectedly or walk in travel lanes.
- Be visible. Wear bright or reflective clothing when walking during low-light conditions.
